Homemade toffee

24th Feb 2014

This is quite a random thing for me to end up making as I am not the biggest toffee fan.

I needed some however for a different receipt that I will share next week and I could (that’s a lie I sent hubby out and he couldn’t, even after 4 shops) find any toffee. So not wanting to be defeated and come back empty handed he did a Google search in Sainsbury’s on how to make it and then got me the ingredients.

It was very easy and I didn’t need to test the temperature, I just wanted for the colour to look nice.

What you need.

  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1 cup of butter
  • 2 tablespoons of vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of golden syrup
  • 1/4 cup of water

All you need to do is all it all into a big pan and bring it to the boil while stirring. Then once it’s bubbling stop stirring and wait for it to darken. I kept quite a close eye on this bit and then when the colour looked good I dropped a few bits into a glass of water to see if they went hard. Once they were going hard in the water I turned the heat off the pan and poured the mixed into a oiled tin.

When the toffee is still a bit squishy score some lines and then you can snap it when its rock solid. Also when the toffee was still sticky I poured nuts, berries and chocolate drops over half the mixed as I didn’t need it all for my other receipt.

As I said I’m not the biggest fan of toffee so once I cracked it up I warped them up and gave them to my toffee loving friends. From what they say it was pretty good.

I might not love it in big lumps but now I know I can make so easily, the next people over for dinner are most definably getting some type of toffee nest on their dessert plate. I cant wait to try them out! Tips greatly received.
