Book review – Candy Making for Kids

7th Sep 2012

I discovered Courtney Dial Whitmore in the wonderful world of blogging last year.  Courtney is a well known stylist and blogger in the filed of party design and entertaining in America. She lives in Tennessee and what drew me to her was her book – Candy Making for Kids.

Although I have been following her blog and updates on twitter and Instagram for quite a while I only just got around to ordering the book.

This book took a little while to grown on me, It’s not the books fault, more of a continent issue. I like a book that is easy to read and work from and the issue with some of the recipes in this book, are that I have no idea what some of the ingredients are. Courtney has been as helpful as she can and very kindly popped a Metric conversion chart at the back . I do hate it when the recipe say use 3 cups, what the beep is a cup.

Some of the ingredients in the book: Marshmallow fluff (sounds amazing), mini pretzels in the shape of a Christmas trees, graham cracker cookies and square honey graham crackers. There is however a list of online suppliers so I’m sure with some research I could fine all of these. I think I may just make the recipes with the ingredients I know however.

You can not review a cook book by reading it, oh know. With a choice of Candy pizza, Marshmallow pops, Gummies, Silly Snowmen and Crazy Caterpillars it was hard but I went with the Rainbow Sprinkle Fudge. I have never made fudge before.

This recipe calls for:

4 ounces of cream cheese

3 cups (750 ml) powder sugar (icing sugar)

1/4 teaspoon salt

11 ounces while chocolate

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon almond extract

3/4 cup rainbow sprinkles

And makes 45/50 bits of fudge.

You have to beat the cream cheese and then slowly add the icing sugar. It looks like way to much icing sugar to start with but it does work. Then melt the chocolate and  pour it in and mix again. Stir in extracts and add some of the sprinkles. Courtney advises not to over mix now otherwise the colours from the sprinkles will bleed. Pour into a grease proof lined pan (mine did not pour and it took a little while to get it spread out) and then add the rest of the sprinkles on top and pop in the fridge.

The only things I did not have, icing sugar and while chocolate, result! Now I must say after making this I am a bit more in love with the book, it was nice an easy and would be so perfect for making with kids. The book also wiped clean which is always a plus, not that I’m messy or anything.

Cut up and pop in some cute bowls to serve.

Cute, Simple and Crummy = Winner.

This is a must make with your kids and would be ideal to serve up at parties.

You can get the book from Courtney’s site Pizzazzerie or Amazon and even after my first reservations I would highly recommend it.

Happy making and do pop you name in the blue box to the right of this blog for my free Top Tips for a Perfect Party download.
